No, it’s not yet another offering from Google. But it does let you make use of a Google offering. Augmented Reality Software of the United Kingdom is offering a tool that will let you capture Google Maps segments and automatically stitch them together to make one big map.
It’s a simple, but cumbersome thing to do on your own. Go to Google Maps. Locate and download all the little bits. Open up a paint program. Create a really big blank document. Then carefully align all the little bits into one great big bit. Yeah, like that’s ever going to happen (more than once).
Version 1.4 of Google Map Buddy is a standalone Windows application. It links you to Google Maps. Lets you select the map area you want. Select a zoom level, so you get the detail you want. Automatically downloads all the little bits that make up the bigger map. Then stitches them all together. (Google Map Buddy gives you the option of saving or discarding all of the little bits once it’s done making the full size map.) The resulting file is saved in PNG format.
Google Map Buddy can cobble together a map that’s 24000 x 19000 map elements, which Augmented Reality says should be more than enough. And you can select what type of map to download: road, satellite, or terrain. There’s also an option for hybrid, which downloads the transparent hybrid layer that’s laid over the satellite images.
