Motherboard makers have high expectations for Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture and expect the platform to account for 20 percent of Intel’s total desktop processor shipments in the first quarter of 2011, DigiTimes reports.
That’s a lofty figure considering Sandy Bridge will likely launch at CES in January. What that essentially means is mobo makers expect the platform to be an instant hit, confidence of which stems from Intel targeting the performance sector with Sandy Bridge. As such, motherboard vendors are busting their rumps trying to get compatible 6-series mobos ready for release.
Getting a head start, both Gigabyte and Asus have started promoting their upcoming 6-series silicon and expect to ship between 5 million to 6 million boards in the first quarter of 2011.
