Part for part and with manufacturing costs taken into account, Amazon appears to be losing $10 for every Kindle Fire tablet it sells, according to a build of materials (BOM) estimate IHS iSuppl i put together. The reason Amazon can afford to sell hardware at a loss -- if in fact the mega online retailer really is losing money -- is because it will make up for it in services and sales after the fact. Corsair Confirms Speed Control Issue Affecting "Small Number" of Hydro Series H100 LCS Units

A number of people have been complaining about a fan control issue affecting their Corsair Hydro Series H100 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler. After tearing into some units, Corsair was able to root out the problem and confirm an issue exists with a "small number of H100 units with lot code 11359403." The lot code is printed on the box, and if yours matches up, Corsair recommends running a simple test. "If you have this lot code, test your installed unit while the system is running by pressing the profile change button," Corsair says. [......]

AMD Grants Single Core Sempron Line a Stay of Execution

You're officially old school if you're still swinging a single-core CPU. AMD's Sempron chips are some of the last of a dying breed, and even though the Sunnyvale chip maker is fully invested in its E-Series and A-Series accelerated processing units (APUs) and upcoming Bulldozer architecture, the company is still planning to shuffle Sempron chips into its lineup for the foreseeable future. A patent filed by Microsoft proposes to use Kinect's body-detecting technology to guess the ages of people using the Xbox 360 peripheral. The system uses a 3D depth camera to measure the proportions of the user's head, shoulders, arms and body to work out their age range, and then controls access to television shows, movies and games. Unlike Microsoft's existing facial recognition system, the body-detection will work on any user, even those who don't have accounts set up on the console[......]
